Where can I buy/reload a West Hartford Town Card?

You can buy the card online or at a number of downtown merchants. At the merchant store you can use cash, credit or debit to load money to the card. Visa, MasterCard Discover and Amex are accepted at the online store.

Is there a cost for the card?

If you obtain a West Hartford Town Card at a merchant store it costs $1 when you first load money to it.  If you purchase one or more cards online there is a total $2 shipping and handling fee per order (not per card).

There is no additional cost to reload money to your card.  All cards must be reloaded at a merchant store.

How much money can I put on a card?

Currently West Hartford Cards can be loaded with up to $100.

Does my card expire?

No, the card has no expiration date.  Money loaded to the card is good for as long as you keep the card.

Do I need to register to buy/use a card?

No. Neither the Town nor Parcxmart requires you to register to buy, reload or use a West Hartford Town Card.

Where should I keep my card?

Like other cards you may have, keep it in your purse or wallet and carry it with you. When it runs low you can reload it a number of downtown merchants that also accept the card as payment. Next time you’re in town, park and treat yourself to coffee or lunch at a West Hartford Town Card merchant and pay for it all with your West Hartford Town Card.

Can I use my West Hartford Town Card when I travel?

You can use your West Hartford Town Card when you travel to other Parcxmart branded Card Towns and Cities at parking meters, at selected garages and lots and in local stores that display the Parcxmart sign. You can also reload your West Hartford Town Card in another Parcxmart town or city. You can even buy a souvenir card from your travel destination and use it when you return home.

What if I lose my card?

The West Hartford Town Card is just like cash and if you lose it no refund will be given.

How durable is my card?

The West Hartford Town Card is very durable and can be used 1,000’s of times at the meters or in a store.  However, like all plastic cards it should not be exposed to excessive heat or cold.  Do not bend the card and do not scratch the ‘gold’ chip.  Over time the chip may appear worn.  This is normal wear-and-tear and will not degrade performance. If necessary wipe excessive moisture off the chip before inserting into a meter.

Can I check my card balance?

Your card balance is printed on your receipt when you first buy and load a card, when you reload your card or when you use your card to purchase something at a store. The receipt includes the starting balance and ending balance before and after the transaction.

The card balance is also displayed when you first insert your card into a meter.  If you want to check your balance and are at or near any meter, you can insert the card, wait for the balance to display and remove your card without purchasing time.  The meter will flash “Err” briefly, but will not affect any time on the meter or the actual balance on your card. Remember, the balance flashes three times before the meter starts to give time, so don’t forget to remove your card once you have noted the balance displayed.

What should I do if the meter does not display my card balance?

If the balance does not display when you insert your card, press the button once and reinsert your card.  If the balance still does not appear, there may be a problem with the meter.  Call the number on the front of the meter to report the problem. Note the street and meter number.

Note that your West Hartford Town Card will work in a meter that is displaying ‘Jam” (i.e. indicating the meter is jammed with coins).

What should I do if the meter displays “Err” when I use my card?

The word “Err” may display for several reasons:

  1. The card was inserted incorrectly (see Using your Card to Pay for Parking)
  2. The meter may have a problem. Remove and reinsert the card.  If the “Err” message persists there is probably an error with the meter – not the card.  To check, locate any other meter nearby, insert your card and wait for the balance to display.  If the balance displays this indicates the original meter has an unknown problem that should be reported to the Town. Remove your card (the meter will display “Err” at this point, but that is normal in this case). If “Err” displays on the second meter please call the toll free number on the back of your card.  A representative will take your call and provide additional assistance.

What if a merchant refuses to accept the card for payment?

Merchant stores that display the West Hartford Town Card sign and who load and reload cards are also contracted to accept the card for the goods and services they provide their customers (subject to certain restrictions).  To allow us to improve your experience with the card for more than just parking, please let us know if a merchant has refused to accept your card for payment Call the toll free number on the back of your card or send us an email at westhartfordcardcard@parcxmart.com.
